Soccer players young and old took to the pitch at Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven last weekend as the spring season got underway for both Martha's Vineyard Youth Soccer and the Over The Hill Soccer League.
Six MV United youth teams played home matches in South Coast Soccer League play. The Under-14 girls settled for a 2-2 tie on a soggy Saturday against Fall River. Natalija Latkis put the Vineyard up 1-0 with a first half goal, assisted by Courtney Howell. Molly Houghton converted a penalty kick at the stroke of halftime to make it 2-0. The visitors fought back in the second half to share the points.
The U-12 boys braved the elements against last year's state champs from Swansea-Somerset and came up just short,1-0.
Sunday, the sun came out and the Vineyard legions filled the onion bag with bunches of goals.
The U-18 boys downed Yarmouth-Dennis 8-0. The U-15 boys ran away from Taunton by the count of 14-0. The U-10 boys were tied with Taunton 2-2 at the half but scored thrice in the second half for a 5-2 win.
The only defensive battle proved to be the U-16 girls match with Norton, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The U-13 boys have ventured into the Mass. Premier League (MAPLE) this season and played away Sunday at Cape Cod Reunited. Nainoa Cooperrider scored on an assist from Nicholas Andre as M.V. earned a 1-0 win.
