21 Jump Street (R)
Loosely based on the 1980s TV show. A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a drug ring that is supplying students with synthetic drugs. A lot of laughs. Gets good reviews from critics and movie-goers alike. Stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube.
Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (PG)
From the Dr. Seuss book about pollution and environmental damage. A boy tries to win the affection of the girl of his dreams and must discover the story of The Lorax, the grumpy, charming creature who fights to protect his world. An animated film for six-year-olds and over, including adults. Starring the voices of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito.
The Hunger Games (PG-13)
The much anticipated action-oriented adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s young adult novel by the same name. Set in a dystopian future in which the income gap is greater than ever, 24 youths fight to the death every year in a televised spectacle designed to entertain the rich and give the poor enough hope to quell any further unrest. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth. This film is a critical and commercial success.
Jeff, Who Lives at Home (R)
A comedy starring Jason Segel (“The Muppets,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) who brings his slacker nerd charm to the title character. A wrong number and an infomercial conspire to send Jeff, who may smoke a bit too much pot, on a quest for signs from the universe, that involve helping his obnoxious brother Pat (Ed Helms, “Cedar Rapids”) discover Linda (Judy Greer, “The Descendants”) in an adulterous affair. A majority of reviewers liked this film.
Mirror Mirror (PG)
A very funny fantasy with real human actors, based on the Brothers Grimm story, “Snow White.” An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven clever rebels to win back her birthright. Stars Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, and Armie Hammer.
Wrath of the Titans (PG-13)
A sci-fi drama of epic proportions involving many of our favorite Greek gods — Zeus, Hades, Perseus, and Poseidon — dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion as they struggle for supremacy with the Titans. Stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Danny Huston, and Ralph Fiennes as Hades.
