Chilmark

Our students are taking a break from their studies this week. April vacation has called out their names to celebrate birthdays, venture to far away places, and to explore their own backyards.

A posse of Chilmark teens is part of the High School group traveling through Spain this week. Katy Smith, Jessica Campbell, Mariah Campbell, and Bradley Carroll are, along with 27 others, taking in all the culture Madrid and Barcelona have to offer. They are in the midst of making memories about the Royal Palace, Prado, Toledo Cathedral, Church of Santo Tome, El Escorial, Parque Guell and more. They are bound to return home with a passion for travel and adventure, a tighter bond with friends and possibly with the ability to teach me how to Flamenco.

There are an abundance of birthdays this week. Celebrants include; Adam Miller, Westley Wlodyka, Brooks Carroll, Claire Nichols, Chas Hollinger, Susan Larsen, Scott McDowell and I am sure plenty more. May your days be filled with balloons, cake, and ice cream. Westley, Brooks, Claire, Susan all would have shared a day with Basil Welch if he were still here with us. I thought of him on the 16th and likely will for the rest of my life.

The Glasgow family — Jakie, Noah, Eric, and Molly — made the most of their vacation week and squeezed in a trip to Texas to visit with grandpa Mike Head and Alice Bohlae. Talking to grandparents on the phone is wonderful but a close-up visit with hugs involved is even better.

Sarah (Levy) and Eugene Langner along with kids Josh and Sam made Grandpa Bernie Levy’s residence in Prospect Hill their home away from home this past long weekend. A long weekend, a beautiful forecast, and itching for a taste of the Vineyard were the perfect excuses to make the trip down from Newton.

Imogen, Ben, Kerry, and Stephen Taylor made their way back to the happiest place on earth. Mickey and Minnie greeted then and kept them rolling in a week’s worth of fun at Walt Disney World.

Jenny Christy along with her children, El, Wren, and Dash, ventured to Vermont for the long weekend to catch up with Jenny’s sister, Chris, and her family. Todd stayed behind to keep up with the demands of his blossoming business, the Chilmark Coffee Company.

JJ Mendez had his opening day at JJ’s MX Park, also known as The Compound. He had a great turn out at his opening weekend and he was really pleased to have the support of the community behind his well-thought-out dirt bike track. Things were well organized and appeared safely managed. A couple of Chilmark kids were already checking things out. Brooks Carroll and Tegan Fenner were admiring the big guys on their 250cc Kawasaki’s and getting ready to roll over a few table tops and whoop dee dos. Check out JJ’s website at jjsmotocrosspark.com or like it on Facebook.

Great food and awesome music could be found at the CCC this past weekend. Friday night the Chilmark School PTO hosted a family friendly dance party. Music arrangements were prepared by Todd Christy and Bradley Carroll. The tunes, which spanned a few decades, were blasted out of the Center’s sound system and the kids went wild. Meg, Dan, Clara, and Zeb Athearn were there along with Ellen, Tauras, Kestutis, Grazina, and Tauras Biskis, Heather, Robert, Jack Lionette, Molly, Eric, Noah and Jakie Glasgow, Julie Flanders, Bella Thorpe, Johna and Oisin McVey, Shannon and Claire Nichols, Frank and Cali Giglio, Peter, Olivia and Adam Knight, Annette Cingle, Annalee Hoy, Scott McDowell and so many more. The kids went home hot, sweaty, and tired. The parents went home having had some much needed conversation.

Saturday night the Center was alive with music once again. The Beetlebung Festival of the Arts and Edibles enticed many for a great meal and remarkable musical talent. Chris Fischer served up potatoes and pork on a bed of kale while Lindsey Scott prepared semi — frozen Mermaid Farm yogurt with granola and a drizzle of honey. Lydia Fischer, Jason Nichols, and more provided music that could simply make you dreamy.
