Once again, the All-Island 7th/8th grade “A” band received a Gold Medal award at the Great East Band Festival, held Friday, May 4, in Palmer.

The “A” band includes 61 students from all five elementary schools on the Island. The judges were generally complementary of their overall tone and blend, for a group at this level, Tisbury School music teacher Julie W. Schilling reported in an email to The Times. “The “A” band has a tradition of performing at this level as they have received nothing but gold or platinum awards in all of the 15 years they have been competing,” she said.

Islanders may hear this group, along with the All-Island Beginners, the 5/6th grade “B” band and the Jazz Band when they perform at their Spring Concert at 7 pm, Wednesday, May 16, at the High School Performing Arts Center.

This evening showcases the talents of more than 200 band students from all the schools. In addition, the Jazz Band will perform at the Edgartown Talent Show on Tuesday May 22, and at the Tisbury School Vocal Concert, on Thursday May 24.

The directors of these talented children are Ms. Schilling, Ruth Scudede-Chapman and Zachary Tileston.
