Nicholas deB. Katzenbach, a former West Tisbury summer resident who guided actress Katherine Cornell’s reconstruction of the Vineyard Haven town hall that now bears her name, died on Tuesday in Skillman, N.J. He was 90.

Mr. Katzenbach served in several positions in the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was an aide to President Kennedy’s brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, then attorney general himself. He was Mr. Kennedy’s unflinching representative in the successful federal effort to desegregate Alabama’s universities, an adviser to President Lyndon B. Johnson, and Under Secretary of State.
