One more weekend before the official beginning of the season. Are you ready? Jobs secured? Childcare in place? Extra room/shack/home rented? Deep breathing practice to use in traffic underway? I am so not ready. Or perhaps I’m half way there. The to-do list is still long, but wheels have been set in motion. And I am of course very ready for some summer cash. That, I am always ready for, I need no preparation. Bring it on.

The Chilmark Preschool is holding an open house this Saturday, May 19, from 9 to 11 am. It will be an opportunity for prospective families and community members to tour the classroom, meet the teachers, and learn about the curriculum. I cannot say enough good things about the Chilmark Preschool, if you are looking for a preschool for your child. The teachers are compassionate and thoughtful, and the community is second to none.

Aquinnah photographer Lauri Bradway’s debut show of her recent photography will be on display May 19 to June 8 at the Chilmark Library. The show is entitled “Island Perspectives.” There will be a reception from 3 to 5 pm this Saturday, May 19; refreshments will be served. For more information, email: Congratulations, Lauri on your first show.

Feeling stressed about the summer already? Come to the Yoga and Meditation workshop at the Bodhi Path this Saturday from 2 to 4:30pm, led by Fae Kontje-Gibbs.

There will be two speakers at the library next week as part of the Aquinnah Public Library Speaker Series. The first, on Tuesday, May 22, will be Judi Shunk who will talk about the history of carousels in America, including the Flying Horses in Oak Bluffs.

The second, on Thursday, May 24, will be Rusty Shunk, who will be conducting an hour-long workshop for people who are nervous about public speaking. Both workshops are at 5 pm. Refreshments will be served, and the programs are free to the public.

The Chilmark Store opened last week. They are open until 3 pm during the week and closed on Sundays through May. The Chilmark Tavern will be opening for the season next Wednesday, May 23. Stop in and say hello.

Congratulations to Lydia Fischer, who graduated from Berklee College of Music over the weekend. Happy Birthday to Aquinnah Witham, whose birthday is today, Thursday May 17, and to Meredith Trimmer, whose birthday is Sunday.

The Dreamcatcher at the Cliffs will open this Thursday for the season.

This coming Saturday, May 19, at 7 pm, and on Sunday, May 20, at 3 pm, the MVRHS Minnesingers will present their spring shows, celebrating 45 years. Former Minnesingers who hail from Aquinnah include Julie and Naushon Vanderhoop, Chelsea Ives, Nina Butler, Jesse Weiner, Matt Scott, and Thomas and Elsie Fantasia. Director Janis Wightman also calls Aquinnah home. If there are other Aquinnah residents who were Minnesingers, please come to one of the shows and introduce yourself. Or let me know and I’ll be sure to mention it in next week’s column.

And rest in peace, Maurice Sendak, whose books my mother read to me and I now read to my son.
