With Memorial Day weekend, looming everything is open and ready at the Cliffs. This was the perfect weekend for a little pre-craziness sunset visit up there. I’m always amazed at how beautiful it is here, every day. I haven’t even minded the rain that much as it has made everything so lush and green. I’ve also managed to sneak in a couple of beach visits in the couple of sunshine-y days we’ve had. We are so truly blessed with the landscape we are surrounded by (and the people).

The Aquinnah Public Library Speaker Series has started again this week. Tonight, Thursday, May 24, at 5 pm, Rusty Shunk, the former Dean of Admissions at Dickinson College will conduct an hour-long workshop for people who are nervous about public speaking. On Tuesday, May 29, Tom Dresser will talk about his new book about the City of Columbus shipwreck, also at 5 pm. There is no charge for the speaker series and refreshments will be served. There are no speakers scheduled for June, but in July and August, you can look forward to hearing from, Nicole Galland, Phil Weinstein, Peter Temple, and June Manning, among many others.

Save the date! Saturday, June 9, at 6 pm there will be a benefit for Rick Vanderhoop at the Aquinnah Shop. A life-long resident of Aquinnah, Rick has been fighting prostate cancer since 2007. His daughter, Heidi, is organizing this along with friends and family to assist with the cost of chemotherapy treatments for Rick. Musicians Kate Taylor and Jennifer Clarke will perform, and there will be a silent auction and of course food! A pig roast, food from 7a, the Aquinnah Shop, and goodies from the Orange Peel Bakery will all be served. Tickets are $50, and you can get them from the Aquinnah Shop, 7a or talk to Heidi. Let’s all come out and rally for Rick.

Lauri Bradway, whose photography show is up and running at the Chilmark Public Library until June 8, was greatly moved by the show of support at her artist’s reception. She had a wonderful time and hopes to be able to put together another show soon.

Jan Wightman wanted to make sure that I mentioned one more former Minnesinger hailing from Aquinnah, Lydia Fischer.

The Outermost Inn has opened. Chilmark Tavern opened this week, along with the new Beetlebung Coffee in Menemsha. Chilmark Store will extend their hours at the beginning of June. Now there are so many places to go but no time to do it in!
