Two Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School students won Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in recent competition.

Senior Anna Hughes won the highest regional award, a gold key, for her writing portfolio. Junior Oscar Thompson won a silver key award for poetry.

Ms. Hughes submitted three poems, two short stories, an expository essay, and a memoir to the competition. One poem focused on how poetry can be a “powerful social movement tool,” Ms. Hughes said in an email to The Times.

Mr. Thompson submitted three poems he wrote about a six-week canoeing trip through the Canadian province of Labrador last summer,

This year’s competition received over 200,000 submissions of artwork, film, and writing from high school students nationwide.

Previous winners of the Scholastic Award include Andy Warhol, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath, and Truman Capote.
