Ross MacPherson, a 2002 graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, is a candidate for the Boston chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year award. Nominated for his past efforts in raising awareness and funds for cancer research and medications, he is now in the last two weeks of a 10-week drive to raise more than $20,000.
Mr. MacPherson says he first participated in a Light the Night walk shortly after the death, from lymphoma in the fall of 1994, of his father, Robert MacPherson, then a surveyor with Schofield Brothers.
Since then, he has done more than 30 walks or events and started an annual concert at his alma mater, the University of New Hampshire. The concert helps both the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Since 2003, these concerts alone have raised more than $10,000. Mr. MacPherson said he was inspired first by his grandfather, William Honey, to help people who need a hand. Now inspiration comes from the dozens of patients and survivors he meets.
Mr. MacPherson has an online donation site at ma.mwoy.llsevent.org/macpherson or checks written to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and mailed to 6 Forest St. Plympton, MA 02367. His email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
