I have to say, I’m not all that disappointed with the wet forecast this week. I finally got some things planted, including a brand-new potato patch I just finished blocking out, and a bit of rain should see everything off to a nice start.

Weekend two of my I Have No Free Weekends Until Mid-July Extravaganza has come to a close. Much of the day Saturday was spent feting Kara Shemeth for her upcoming nuptials. Mother Nancy and sister Justine threw a lovely shower in the morning, filled with familiar faces. That evening, a few of us continued the fun down on Mill Street.

I got to enjoy a bit of the sun on Sunday, bopping around downtown. And Sunday evening, we inhaled our first ice cream cones of the season at Scoops, while looking across the street at the not yet open Port Hunter Restaurant in the old wood shop, the latest undertaking of the Courtney boys. Rumor has it a mid-June opening is in the works. Can’t wait.

Congratulations to Emily Woods, daughter of Al and Julie Woods of Dodger’s Hole, who recently graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). Prior to her Nurses Pinning and Graduation ceremonies at SHU, Emily was hired to work as an RN at the Vineyard Nursing Association in Vineyard Haven. Emily grew up summering with her family in Chilmark, and most recently worked the past seven summers at the Menemsha Galley. We will be lucky to have her bring her newly earned skills back to the community.

So, yeah, Denise Searle’s birthday is June 6, not June 3. And seeing as she is one of my best friends, I should know this. But I’m one of those people who, since the advent of the cell phone, can’t even tell you my own parents’ phone numbers anymore without looking them up. There’s an Internet meme from someecards.com that goes, “Happy birthday to one of the few people whose birthday I can remember without a Facebook reminder.” Well, Denise is not on Facebook, so I’ll happily take suggestions on when we should honor her next year: June 10, perhaps? Seriously, though, I really have no excuse, as her birthday is D-Day, and that is ALWAYS June 6.

Speaking of D-Day, my grandfather, Ted Morgan, is on his now nearly annual journey to Normandy to attend the anniversary ceremonies of that historic event, accompanied by son Tim. Despite the weather on the Vineyard making its best attempts to thwart his flights, Grampy made it to France with the same characteristic determination with which he made four combat jumps during WWII.

The residents of Windemere are having their annual auction Friday, June 15, from 6 to 8 pm at the Ag Hall to benefit the residents’ activity programs. Offerings will include wine, desserts, and light fare; live and silent auctions, as well as a raffle. On the auction and raffle blocks, you’ll find gift baskets from Fiddlehead Farm and Good Dog Goods; photographs by Alison Shaw; massages; fly fishing lessons; a bass fishing trip; golf lessons; meals at the Galley, Farm Neck, and the Home Port; lobsters from Larsen’s ; a plane ride over the Vineyard; Chilmark Chocolates; and much more.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum in cooperation with the MV Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Coast Guard, and Trustees of Reservations challenges you to conquer the 5th Annual Lighthouse Challenge on Saturday, June 9. The Lighthouse Challenge includes the opportunity to climb to the top of the Edgartown, East Chop, and magnificent Gay Head Lights, the chance to visit the West Chop Light, and the test of getting to the Cape Poge Light, reachable only by an over-sand four-wheel drive vehicle (advanced reservations required through the Trustees of Reservations). Tickets also include admission to the Museum, home of the 1854 original Fresnel Lens from the Gay Head Light. More information on the challenge is available by visiting mvmuseum.org/lighthouse-challenge.php.

To those it may concern: June 13 is Annual Shannon Dolby Smith Appreciation Day. Do not forget to mark your calendars and make the appropriate gift purchases, Facebook acknowledgments, and emoticon-heavy texts, lest we all suffer the consequences. Just kidding (kind of). Happy birthday, Sis!

Happy birthday, Madeline Fisher, who will celebrate on June 14 (also Flag Day) by braving her first swim in the season. Hope you have a good one.
