Photography aplenty at Martha’s Vineyard galleries

Photography lovers will find plenty to look at in Vineyard galleries this weekend.

The work of Anthony A. Austin will go on display Friday, June 8, in the Photography Gallery located at the WorkOut and Vineyard Tennis Center (WOVTC) at the airport. The Louisa Gould Gallery will host a talk by Vineyard Haven photographer Janet Woodcock. And opening on Sunday, June 10, Featherstone Center for the Arts has two new photography exhibits.

Titled The Loose Ghost, Mr. Austin’s show at the WOVTC consists of images from 2010, when he spent three or four days a month photographing from sun up to sundown all over the Island. Mr. Austin divides his time between East Chop and New York City. The Photo Gallery at WOVTC, in operation now for several years and coordinated by photographer Alida O’Loughlin of Oak Bluffs, will host an opening reception for the artist Friday, June 8, from 5 to 7 pm.

Ms. Woodcock plans to discuss the process of shooting images in a series and how ideas for a photo project develop in her talk on Saturday, June 9, at Vineyard Haven’s Louisa Gould Gallery. Her work, which consists of silver gelatin prints, is on exhibit through Friday, June 13. The hour-long talk will begin at 5 pm.

Featherstone is fielding an unusual exhibit, The Art of iPhone Photography, in the Virginia Weston Besse Gallery, as well as Across the Pond and Back, featuring the work of Marshall Pratt and Inas Al-soqi, in the Pebble Gallery. The two exhibits open on Sunday, June 10, with simultaneous receptions from 4 to 6 pm.

In other gallery notes, Edgartown’s Old Sculpin continues its members group show, featuring pastels and oils by award-winning artist Sharon McCann Daly. There is no opening reception this Sunday, June 10.
