While the Island is full of places to shop, eat, and explore, it’s the water surrounding it that defines its character. As the weather gets warmer folks flock to the beach, and a trip to the right one can be the highlight of a Vineyard summer.

To hear about the best spots on the Island we went to Vineyard Haven to find out: “What’s your favorite beach?”

Grace Shelley, Holy Cross College graduate, and Chloe, age 5

“We like up-Island beaches like Lambert’s Cove [West Tisbury] and Lucy Vincent [Chilmark] because they’re not too crowded…We like playing in the sand.”

Sophie Sobel, West Tisbury

“I like South Beach [Edgartown] because there are waves and you can play volleyball. It’s very lively.”

Breeze, of West Tisbury, with grandchildren Nola, 4, and Eamon, 6, of Vineyard Haven

“It depends on the situation. Menemsha because it’s quiet. Eastville [Oak Bluffs] for dinners and sunsets. South Beach [Edgartown] to go swimming in the waves. We like this beach [Owen Park in Vineyard Haven] because you can get ice cream, go shopping, and go to the beach.”

Lance Fullin, Island resident, downstairs floor manager at The Green Room

“There are different beaches for different purposes. Aesthetically, I like up-Island. You got Lucy [Vincent] and all those guys up there. Long Point [West Tisbury] for surfing. And [name omitted] Pond to go to alone. But don’t put the name in there because I don’t want a lot of people to blow up the spot.”

Sal Macnamara, Vineyard Haven

“Squibnocket. When the weather is favorable, it’s long and flat and waves break pretty far out so it’s good for body surfing.”
