Old Sculpin announces 2012 scholarship winners

Islanders Noelle Nelson, Courtney Mussell, and Christine Janak (alternate) have won this year’s Martha’s Vineyard Art Association scholarships. Their work goes on display June 16 to 22 at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown.

Ms. Nelson will present a series of graphic drawings that focus on textures and patterns inspired by the Island. Ms. Mussell, who expects to study interior and sustainable design at Endicott College, will display work reflecting a love of nature, balance, and unity. Graphic design is the field Ms. Janak plans to pursue at the college level, and her art employs text and images in figurative compositions.

“Each of the artists already has a well-developed understanding of form and visual aesthetics,” says Old Sculpin director Kat Cope. “The students were chosen from a very competitive field of talented young Island artists.”

The Sculpin plans a reception for the scholarship recipients on Sunday, June 17, from 5 to 7 pm. The gallery is now open 10 am to 7 pm, seven days a week. For more information, call 508-627-4881 or visit oldsculpingallery.org.

Photo show continues in West Tisbury

An exhibit of photographs by Dutch-born Vineyarder Alida O’Loughlin continues at the West Tisbury Library through June. A late arrival to professional photography, Ms. O’Loughlin is self-taught and uses a non-digital camera.

The former director of the Cambridge Center for Adult Education says, “These photographs are what they are: a conscious moment in time, a moment of light, not retouched or altered in any way. I hope the viewer will find some enjoyment of recognition in what my eyes and camera experienced.” For more information, call 508-693-3366 or email programs@westtisburylibrary.org.
