Edgartown

I have officially traded in four wheels for two for the next couple of months. I can’t believe how busy town has gotten overnight. So look for me downtown on my lime green beach cruiser, and let me know what’s new.

It’s fun to see some familiar faces popping up that I have missed the last few months. Kevin and Lizzy Ward are back in town for the summer, and Lizzy hosted some friends from their other life in Florida for the first few days back. I haven’t seen little Brooke and Zach yet, but I can’t wait to hear about their winter adventures.

Happy anniversary to Laura and Tim Bryan, who celebrated June 16. Here’s to many more.

Congratulations and condolences to Joel and Joanne DeRoche. Congrats to Joel on nabbing a giant bear on his recent hunting trip in Canada, and condolences to his wife who will now most likely have to live with that thing’s head mounted on a wall in her home. So apropos for my only friends who actually mentioned hunting in their wedding vows.

Tom Clark, the collections and grounds manager of Polly Hill Arboretum, will lead a walking tour of the many glorious, mature trees of Edgartown on Wednesday, June 27, from 10 am to 12 noon. In the midst of the mantle of green that envelops downtown Edgartown, the hydrangeas and picket fences, many unique and fine specimen trees await discovery, including of course the famous pagoda tree. To pre-register and for carpool and meeting location, call 508-693-9426.

The FARM Institute has a full roster of summer programs beginning this week, including tours, children’s camp, and of course home grown local food items available at the farm stand. Tickets are now on sale for Meals in the Meadow, the FARM Institute’s annual fundraising gala, which will take place on July 21. Enjoy a gourmet meal in the expansive, beautiful fields of Katama; bid on auction items; and dance to Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. All proceeds directly benefit education programs. Visit farminstitute.org for event details.

Featherstone Center for the Arts welcomes a special celebratory show of Vineyard Copley Society artists, which opens Sunday, July 1, and continues daily from 12 noon to 4 pm through July 18. The Copley Society (Co-So) is the oldest not for profit arts organization in the U.S. that invites outstanding artists to participate in shows to promote the artistic endeavors of its juried selected members. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, July 1, from 4 to 6 pm. Be sure and check out Edgartown artists Nancy Furino, Meg Mercier, Rosalie Shane, Jeanne Staples, and Ovid Ward.

I received word from Nis Kildegaard that the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association will kick off its summer 2012 reading program with a performance by the award-winning children’s recording artist Mr. G at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury on Saturday, June 30, at 11 am. In addition to music, there will be face painting.

“Dream Big: Read” is the theme of the statewide summer reading program this year, so get ready for some fun events at Edgartown Public Library this summer. Visit edgartownlibrary.org for a schedule of events.

Happy birthday to Kelley DeBettencourt, who celebrates June 27. May your day be filled with good friends and good food.
