Edgartown

Holy moly, you folks have been busy! The sheer volume of announcements and events in my inbox this week was a little overwhelming. I’m sure it will be balanced next week with steady silence as everyone is out celebrating our country’s independence. I hope you all have something fun planned.

I finally made it into the water this past weekend. How could I not when the temperature jumped from the sixties to the nineties without skipping a beat? The real highlight of the day was being welcomed aboard Donny Welch’s Beetle Cat for a quick cruise around Edgartown Harbor. Nicki Miller and I enjoyed not only the sail but the history lesson that came with it as Donny told us about how the catboat “came about” (har, har) as well as some of his family history.

I am so excited to congratulate Laura Alexander on the opening of Evolve, her new Pilates studio across the street from Stop and Shop. Doors officially opened Wednesday, June 27, and Laura reports that the schedule will include a mix of mat (group) classes and private and semi-private sessions. One more thing we don’t have to leave town for! For more information, call 508-627-6060.

The library invites you to celebrate a couple of milestones at an open house Friday, June 29, from 2 to 5:30 pm. On the agenda is a meet-and-greet with new director, Jill Hughes, who takes the helm full-time on June 25. Also, it’s time to toast the historic town votes of April 10 and 12 to build a new Edgartown Public Library on the site now occupied by the 1924 Edgartown Elementary School building, to serve the people of Edgartown for generations to come.

I’ve had word from Barbara Phillips that Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard will present the Jubilee for Art on July 1st from 5 to 7 pm at the Wesley Hotel. Many local artists have contributed to this celebration of affordable art. Enjoy an evening reception of the porch of the Wesley Hotel. Purchase works by these artists at an incredible price of only $100 per piece. The art show is free and open to all. Donations will be gratefully accepted.

Congratulations to winners of the 2012 Best of the Vineyard contest, sponsored by Martha’s Vineyard Magazine, including Mad Max Sailing Adventures, Wheel Happy, Felix Neck, Sharky’s Cantina, Nectar’s, Entertainment Cinemas, CB Stark Jewelers, The Black Dog, Atria, Humphreys Bakery, Morning Glory Farm, Mad Martha’s, Rosbeck Builders, Helene Schaeffer, MV Savings Bank, Hob Knob, and Harbor View Hotel & Resort.

The Vineyard Haven Band will play July 4th at 7:30 pm at the Old Whaling Church. The band dates back to 1868 and is a true Vineyard institution, therefore not to be missed.

Happy birthday to Diane Smadbeck, who celebrates June 28. I hope Art cooks you something good and that your sons are home to enjoy it with you. To Megan Anderson, who celebrates July 2, I wish for a nice day so Emily and Paige can take their mama to the beach. To Kate Walpole, who celebrates July 3, may Miss Zoe slather you in wet puppy kisses. To Maggie Brogan, who celebrates July 4, I hope the holiday means you get to stay on Island and sleep in for a change!

And finally, here’s to the ol’ red, white, and blue. Long may you fly.
