In the headlines this week are a few family get-togethers, a birthday or two, some local events and a mention of who’s in town. It’s hard to cram every newsworthy tidbit, in so bear with me if you don’t make the cut this week. Email me at Squidrow@Vineyard.net and a mention is sure to follow.

Lets send some well wishes and healing thoughts to our Cross Road neighbor Bill Smith who is, yeah, out of the hospital after a brief stay.

Josh Gamson, son of Zee and Bill, is here from Oakland, California, with his two adorable girls, Reba (6 1/2) and Maddy (almost 3), for an extended visit. Josh’s partner, Richard Knight, will arrive shortly after he stitches up a few loose ends in his role as ER doc. Daughter Jenny Gamson visited from Newton with her husband, Steve Seckler, and her teens, Maya (13), Ari (15), and Gilad (17). They parted ways upon their departure as the kids went west to Stockbridge for camp and the parents east to Tuscany for a vacation. Zee and Bill have assumed the role of large and in charge as they hold down the fort here at home.

Bill Edison phoned in with a Flanders Field softball update. The July 1 game brought out heavy-hitting, award-winning Bizu Horwitz. Bizu was in full uniform and really stole the show along, with the spiffy new red ball caps handed out by Ted Sattler and Mark Friedman.

Andy Goldman will present a slide show and discussion about his recent trip to Egypt and Jordan at the Chilmark Library on Wednesday, July 11, at 5:30 pm. Andy and his wife, Susan Heilbron, visited the Middle East on an excursion sponsored by the Harvard University Alumni Association. The trip included visits to the Great Pyramid complex at Giza, the necropolis in Sakkara, the tombs of Luxor, a four-day Nile River cruise, St. Catherine’s Monastery on the Sinai Peninsula, antiquity sites in Amman, Jordan, and a stop at Jordan’s ancient rose-red city Petra on the 200th anniversary of its rediscovery.

Ray Shea shared that his parents celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Friday, June 28. with a small get-together. Gertrude and Roland, formerly of North Road and Hammett Lane, are presently staying in Ludlow where they can be closer to family.

There was a little mishap at Roberta and Jim Morgan’s Harbor Craft Shop a couple of weeks ago. An early-morning driver’s error landed a pickup truck in the door of the shop. Fortunately no humans were injured, but the shop suffered some damage that we hope will be repaired in no time flat. Patrick Ruel has put his handyman carpentry skills to work to get the shop back in order. Fortunately, Captain Jim is back sitting on the porch and the chairs, umbrellas, and other summer goodies are in full display.

Dan Levy and his wife, Sara Cosgrove, along with their children, Annabel and Noah, visit grandfather Bernie Levy and Suzanne Greenberg of Prospect Hill. Sarah Levy Langner and son, Josh, will also put their spin on the grandpa Bernie visit. Sarah’s husband, Eugene, and son, Sam, will miss out on this Menemsha adventure as they set the bar high with a trip to the Big Apple. A visit to the Intrepid, space capsule, and other cool sights are on the to-do list.

According to Pam Goff, the church is very active. Worship is at 9 am on Sundays. Lobster Rolls are Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7 pm followed by the Vineyard Sound at 8. The Flea Market in Jenkinsons’ field on North Road is in full swing, both Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm. Primo Lombardi Yoga is a great way to start your day both Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15. Additionally, there is a year-round AA meeting on Mondays at 8 pm. Just a little aside, second-grader Christian Carroll’s father, Gil, is parking coordinator at the Flea. Stop by and check him out in action.

Happy birthdays to Tyler Shipway, Beth Mayhew, Kathie Carroll, Marina Lent, Lev Wlodyka, Jess Bradlee, Heather Quinn, Jill Placek, Eric Glasgow, Jason Balaban, Donald Sexton, Norman Freed and more.

Kim, Tucker, and Ella Simonsen are at their Flanders Lane home along with Kim’s brother Kenny and his new bride Lori. The happy couple is celebrating their honeymoon Vineyard style.

Johnny Graham is back in town after a trip back to the California Coast. This time he has with him his beautiful gal, Lori Robinett. After experiencing just a few hours in town she already realizes it will be difficult to leave. Sea breezes, friendly faces, and glorious sunsets can really call out.
