To the Editor:
In the wake of the tragic Fourth of July traffic accident, I hope all of us will remember the tremendous debt of gratitude we owe our first responders – the police, firemen, and EMTs who are there 24 hours a day, whenever disaster strikes.
Many are unpaid volunteers who, at the sound of a beeper, put their personal lives on hold to rush to the scene of an emergency. In speaking with volunteer responders, I have been humbled by the amount of training and coursework they complete on an ongoing basis in order to best serve their community. We are fortunate to have such dedicated individuals living among us.
