Edgartown plans art stroll
Edgartown hosts an Arts Stroll tonight, July 12, from 6 to 8 pm. Participants include North Water Gallery, Christina Gallery, Willoughby Fine Arts, and Eisenhauer Gallery.
Look for “Pastoral Dreamer” in the Eisenhauer Gallery courtyard. It’s a new, 10-foot sculpture by David Phelps of a reclining man who is wearing a baseball hat. Valet parking will be available for Edgartown Arts Stroll in front of Eisenhauer. Other Edgartown galleries such as John Stobart will also be open during the Stroll. Call 508-627-7003 for information.
North Water Gallery will feature three of its top artists during the stroll, from 5 to 7 pm. New to the gallery this year, Traeger di Pietro displays mixed media work and impressionist landscapes; Jim Holland will have his exquisitely realist landscapes on exhibit; Ken Otsuka’s meticulous and light-flooded realist paintings of surf and beach make up the third element of the show. Call 508-627-6002.
Ledesma Gallery features sculptor Skip Treglia
Impish and fun describe the sculpture of artist Skip Treglia at the Washington Ledesma Gallery in Oak Bluffs. It’s made of found objects gathered from the local shoreline and waters. The show opens Friday, July 13, with a reception from 6 to 8 pm, and it continues Saturday and Sunday during the day. Call 508-693-1823 for information.
Reception at Granary
In West Tisbury the Granary will hold an opening event for four of its artists on Sunday, July 15, from 5 to 7 pm. Call 508-693-0455.
Carolyn Daniele has “art in the stacks”
The Vineyard Haven Public Library offers patrons art as well as books during July. Carolyn Daniele is displaying watercolors and oil paintings as part of the library’s “Art in the Stacks” program. A multimedia artist, Ms. Daniele makes ceramic sculpture as well as the two-dimensional art showing this month at the library. Featherstone Center for the Arts, the West Chop Club, the All-Island Art Show, Dragonfly Gallery and the Family Planning Art Show have also hosted this artist, whose diverse work includes landscapes, still lifes, abstracts, and animal subjects. Old Sculpin opens new show July 14
Martha’s Vineyard Art Association members Nina Gomez Gordon, June Schoppe, Katie Hutchinson and Victor Pisini are exhibiting their work at Edgartown’s Old Sculpin Gallery, running from July 14 to 20.
There will be a reception for the artists on Sunday, July 15, from 5 to 7 pm. Both Ms. Gordon and Ms. Schoppe paint plein air. Ms. Hutchinson’s photographs celebrate the grace of the ordinary, and Mr. Pisini rends Vineyard scenes through color, light, and atmosphere. Call 508-627-4881 for more information.
Museum sponsors Stanley Murphy slide show
In a reprise of a popular event this spring, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is hosting a slide show of revered Vineyard artist Stanley Murphy’s work on Thursday, July 12, at 5:30 pm in Vineyard Haven’s Katharine Cornell Theatre.
David Murphy, the late artist’s younger son, will present some 400 slides of his father’s work, accompanied by his son on his grandfather’s Martin guitar. A sale of giclée prints of Mr. Murphy’s work will benefit the West Tisbury Library Foundation.
Admission is $8 for museum members; $12 for non-members. Call 508-627-4441 for recommended reservations or information.
