Mark Engerman of Concord was the first of 54 runners to complete the five-kilometer journey from the Oak Bluffs School to the Martha’s Vineyard Arena on Saturday morning, winning the second annual Run to the Rink in 19:20.

Fortunately for all involved, at the start of the race, the skies were overcast and the temperatures were comfortable. When the sun broke through by early afternoon, the Island was overcome with heat and humidity.

The runners started the race by circling the Oak Bluffs School and traveling down Trade Winds Road. Once past the dog park, the competitors crossed County Road and ran down the bike path to the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, turned right, and headed for the Arena.

The race runner-up was Thomas Szumita of Wakefield, R.I., who finished in 20:20.

Third overall was the women’s winner, Lauren Carey, of Newton, who crossed the line in 21:15. Geoff Gagnier finished fourth in 21:55.

The first Islander to finish was Brian Donnelly of Vineyard Haven, who placed fifth overall, with a time of 22:16.

Rounding out the top ten were: Scott William (22:41); Greg Rubin (22:57); George Sykes (23:42); Alison O’Donald (24:32); and Jill Zamarro (24:45).

Seven-year-old Jack Lionette of Chilmark was the first 12-and-under runner to finish; he placed 14th overall in 25:37.
