Hockey clinic with national champs

The NCAA Division One national champion Boston College Eagles will be back on the Vineyard, August 6–9, at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena for a Mites and Bantams hockey clinic.

Eagles’ associate head coach Mike Cavanaugh and assistant coach Greg Brown will lead the instruction and be joined by 2011 captain Joe Whitney and 2012 assistant captain Paul Carey. Other current and former Eagle players will be announced.

The clinic has three sessions per day, starting at 5 pm. Proceeds to benefit Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey.

Getting Hooked on youth hockey

Hooked (formerly Lola’s) of Oak Bluffs, will host the “Getting Hooked” fundraiser, benefiting Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey, on August 4, from 11 am-2 pm.

The event will include a bottomless bloody mary and mimosa brunch, silent and live auction, and music by Philly D.

Men’s softball

The Hurricanes and Wildcats continue to hold the 1-2 spots as the postseason approaches.

Monday night at Veterans Park, the ‘Cats missed a chance to gain on the idle ‘Canes, dropping a 7-6 decision to the sixth-place Blazers.

The Highlanders, who were the hot team two weeks back, lost their third straight, 9-8, to the Treds.

In one of the wildest games of the season, the Sons of Pitches out slugged the Brewhas, 26-21. S.O.P co-captain Ben Ferry was back in the lineup, and he provided some much needed spark. New pitcher Mike Capen was 5 for 5 with his bat.

Last Thursday, July 19, the Hurricanes were a category five in a 37-9 drubbing of the S.O.P.s. The Wildcats defeated the Highlanders, 12-10, and the Brewhas bested the Blazers, 13-7.

The current standings have the Hurricanes on top at 10-2, followed by the Wildcats (8-5), Highlanders (7-6), Brewhas (7-6), Treds (5-8), Blazers (4-9), and the S.O.P.s (4-9).

Women’s softball

Thunder, lightning, and heavy rain caused the cancellation of Tuesday’s triple-header at Veterans Park. The games will be made up next week. The top two teams, the Snaps and Creamers, will meet for the second time this season, next Tuesday.

July 19, the Creamers defeated the Shady Ladies, 17-5, in Edgartown. At Veterans Park, the Honeys downed the Late Fees, 15-4.

As the season hits the homestretch, the Snaps are in first place at 7-1, followed by the Creamers (7-2), Honeys (5-4), Rug Sox (3-5), Late Fees (3-5), and the Shady Ladies (0-8).

Soccer players will take to the pitch in nearly all conditions, but lightning isn’t one of them. As a result, the two Vineyard Football Association matches scheduled for Tuesday night were postponed.

Last Thursday, July 19, Coop de Ville finally got in the win column with a 1-0 win over Island Copper. Delcio Candido scored the goal. Coupled with a 2-2 draw against MV Celtic the previous night, Coop have climbed off the bottom of the table, with four points.

In the second contest, Ben Ritter scored to lift Sports Haven to a 1-0 victory over MV Celtic.

The current VFA standings: Monto Orthopedics (6-0-0), Sports Haven (3-2-0), Atlantic Football Club (3-2-0), MV Celtic (1-3-1), Coop de Ville (1-4-1), Island Copper (1-4-0).

Vineyard U-19s win 3 v 3 challenge

A team of six Vineyard under-19-year-old soccer players traveled to Lancaster, home of the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions, on July 14 and won the 3 v 3 Challenge tournament. The event is organized by the Mass. Premier League.

Three on three soccer is played with three players per side, with no goalkeeper and a 4′ by 8′ goal.

Six players made the trip with coach Andrew Worlock: Felipe Freitas, Augusto Nunes, Lynacker De Souza, John Oliveira, Rodrigo Honorato, and Jason Lages.

The Vineyard tied its first two matches 9-9 and 8-8 against The Flash and the Mass Premier team. In the final game, M.V. and The Flash played to a another 9-9 draw in regulation, but the Vineyard side got the match winner in sudden-death OT. With the win, the Vineyard U-19s are eligible to take part in the national tournament at Disneyworld in Florida, August 2–3.

Little League success for MV Tens

The Martha’s Vineyard ten-year-old Little League baseball team finished second in the Rochester Invitational on the weekend of July 14, with a record of 3-1-1.

The highlight was a 2-1 Vineyard victory over host Rochester, the tournament favorite. Pitchers Jeremy Regan and Jake Howell limited the Bulldogs to four hits and no walks.

Joe Serpa and Owen Bresnick delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the first inning to give the Islanders all the offense they would need.

The Vineyard tens followed up with a double-header sweep of Nantucket on July 17, by scores of 8-7 and 12-5.

In the first contest, Jake Howell and Jeremy Regan combined for seven hits to lead M.V.

In game two, Jared Regan and Joe Serpa led a balanced attack with five combined hits.

The team also includes: Ben Peters, Colby Baboni, Harold Lawry, Ryan Scanlon, Peter Burke, Patrick Dutton, Mike Cosgrave, Kenney Hatt, and Jacob Maccaferri.

Holmes Hole sailing

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its Thursday Evening series of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven Harbor with a 6 pm race on July 19.

It was a warm summer evening with a light east-southeast wind. Fifteen boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the breakwater. A triangular course was set with the fleet sailing to red nun 4 off West Chop, then to green can 23A off East Chop, and returning to the finish line at red nun 6.

First was Stephen Besse in the J 120, Apres. In second was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31, Stormalong. In third was Bow Van Riper in the Vineyard 15, Tyche. Fourth was Mike Loberg in Masquerade, and fifth were John And Lisa Stout in Isabella.

The summer racing series continued on Sunday, July 22, when The Chappy Rendezvous was scheduled, but light air caused a change in plans and the race committee called for a Harbor Race from red nun 6 to nun 4 off West Chop, then to green can 23A off East Chop, and back to red nun 6, twice around. Ten boats came for the start at 10 am, which was delayed 30 minutes to let the wind fill in. The race commenced at about 10:30, and was slow in the flukey, shifting breeze.Finishing first in the A division was Roger Becker in the C&C 24, Gloria. In second was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36, Masquerade. In third was Mo Flam in the Alerion 26, Penelope. Fourth was Jerry Goodale in Stormalong. King Kiwi retired in the light air.In the B division, first was Woody Bowman in the Custom Cat, Julia Lee. Second were John and Lisa Stout in the Gannon and Benjamin Sloop, Isabella. Third was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. Avanti and Pax retired.The season continues with a night race at 6 pm on July 26 and a Sound Race on July 29 at 12 noon.
