The run-off from a torrential downpour Saturday night was too much for a storm drain under Beach Street in Vineyard Haven. On Tuesday, work crews repaired a section of roadway in front of the Vineyard Haven post office, just west of the Five Corners intersection.

The massive flow of water from the downpour “overpressurized” the pipe, according to a work crew supervisor, and blew the manhole cover and surrounding asphalt right off the road.

One lane of the triple lane road was closed. Summer traffic, always heavy, snaked by the work site.

“It hasn’t been too bad,” Tisbury Police officer Andrew Silvia said.
