For the 55 years, Vineyarders have found interesting reads at very low prices at the West Tisbury book sale.

On Friday morning, July 27, thousands of books filled the West Tisbury School gym, offering a variety of subjects at different reading levels. Books available for sale ranged from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents Earth,” which sold for two dollars, to a Cold War era children’s pop-up book written in Russian which sold for 50 cents.

The West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. hosts the sale with Friends of the West Tisbury Library, Inc.

The initial sale was held on the porch of the old Agricultural Hall, now known at as the Grange Hall, during the annual Agricultural Fair in 1957.

Jane Newhall, a resident of West Tisbury who died last year, was an organizer of the original sale and helped organize the event each year following. This year, the event was dedicated to Ms. Newhall, and several of her paintings were on display.

The annual sale raises funds for the West Tisbury Free Public Library.
