Melodye Jean Wells, 67, died on August 2, 2012, in the comfort of her home in Swanton, Vermont, with her family at her side after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born on August 14, 1944, in St. Albans, Vt., Melodye was the daughter of the late Filmer and Francis Leadbeater.

Melodye married David Theodore Wells in St. Albans on August 22, 1964. David was a longtime employee of People’s Trust Company and completed his journey in life on April 28, 2007.

Melodye was a 1962 graduate of Bellows Free Academy, and was employed for 23 years at A.N. Deringer, Inc. After the insurance division was purchased by Hackett Valine & MacDonald, Inc., Melodye enjoyed another 11 years of employment and managed the Select Business Unit where her diligent care for her clients made her a valued and respected employee.

She held several insurance designations, was a member of the Red Hat Society, a communicant of Holy Angels Parish, and volunteered for Hospice.

Melodye enjoyed the ocean, traveling, casinos, the great outdoors, and being with her family and friends. Her happiest moments were spending time with her two grandchildren, Zachary and Aubrey.

Melodye is survived by her two daughters, Kim Wells and her husband, Charlie Utz, of Vineyard Haven, and Robin Wells and he fiancé, Brian Devaney of Swanton; her grandchildren, Zachary Utz and Aubrey Claire Devaney; her brothers, Arnold and Robert Leadbeater, her sister, Lorraine Martin; her sister-in-law, Joanne Wells and her partner, Michael Cain; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Sally Wells; several nieces and nephews, her best friend, Sally Severy, and her beloved cat, Smuggs.

A Mass of Christian Burial and interment took place of Monday, August 6.
