We have said goodbye to our July visitors and now welcome the August ones. It seems impossible that the summer is half over. People are still headed to the beaches, stores, and shops. Most are very understanding of the traffic lines and try to be helpful in keeping things flowing along. Lets make the remainder of this time pleasant for all.

On Saturday, August 11, from 9 am to 3 pm is the Annual MVCMA Craft Fair at the Tabernacle. Lots of interesting jewelry, food items, linens, needlework, Vineyard items, beach glass and more. Over 30 vendors will be selling their crafts. Also that same day at 7:30 pm the Children’s Play “Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland” will be presented. Island children will perform this wonderful musical based on the book by Lewis Carroll. Free will offering will be taken. Don’t miss Saturday, August 18, when the concert “Treasures at Dusk” by the Wynton Marsalis Quintet will take place at the Tabernacle at 5:30 pm Tickets ($25, $50, and $100) are available at TicketsMV.com and at the door.

Children In The Arts of Martha’s Vineyard will present the magnificent ballet production of “The Little Mermaid” on Sunday, August 12, at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School . Martha’s Vineyard School of Ballet students have been striving towards this experience for many months, anticipating the arrival of the professional Atlantic Coast Ballet. To celebrate the performance of “The Little Mermaid” there will be a Princess Pony Party the day before on Saturday, August 11 from 5 to 7 pm at Pond View Farm off New Land in West Tisbury. There will be pony rides, face painting, beaded ponytails, pony games, hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn, etc. Special guest appearances of characters from The Little Mermaid Oak Bluffs performers are Madison Allee, Ava McGee, Madison Pitmen, and Narla Pitmen

A bench in honor of Anita Parker will be dedicated at the library. A longtime staffer at the library, Anita passed away last September. All library patrons, both year-round and summer, are welcome to come to the ceremony on Thursday, August 23, at 10 am.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is holding its annual meeting highlighted by the 2012 Martha’s Vineyard Medal award ceremony. This year’s recipients are the Athearn Family, presented to Jim and Debbie Ahearn, Geraldine Brooks and Tony Horwitz and Hugh Knipmeyer The meeting will be held on Monday, August 13 at 5 pm at the Federated Church, 45 South Summer Street, Edgartown. There will be a reception to follow in the Pease House Galleries back at the Museum around the corner. The event is open to all museum members and the general public.

The Martha’s Vineyard Democratic Council members are very excited that the two Democratic candidates for the 9th Congressional seat will speak on Saturday, August 11, from 9 to 10:30 am. The meeting will take place at the Howes House in West Tisbury, across the street from Alley’s General Store. The primary election is on Thursday, September 6, and this will be the only time Vineyard residents have a chance to hear from and talk with our current Congressman, Representative Bill Keating, and his challenger, Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter. Both men will talk about their accomplishments and their priorities for Congress in the next two years.

The Cast of The Wire will be featured at an evening reception on Wednesday, August 15, from 6:30 to 8 pm at the home of Judy and Ron Davenport in Oak Bluffs. The event is a benefit for President Obama’s Victory Fund. For more information, contact rfleury@barackobama.com or info@mvdems.org.
