West Tisbury police found two bottles of vodka, one empty and one partially full, in the cab of Jennifer Brown’s pickup truck after she slammed into the rear end of a car and sent it sliding on its side off State Road near the Island Farms subdivision at 4 pm, Tuesday afternoon.
Joseph Spinelli, 72, of Miami Beach, Florida, the driver of a 2004 Subaru, was stopped and waiting for another vehicle to make a turn when Ms. Brown, 33, of Edgartown, driving down Island on State Road in her 2008 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck, struck the waiting Subaru, West Tisbury Police Chief Dan Rossi told The Times.
The pickup truck was in the woods and the Subaru was on its side when Cpl. Garrison Viera and officer Robert Cusack arrived. Tri-town ambulance and West Tisbury fire department emergency personnel responded and helped to extricate Mr. Spinelli. Police detoured traffic around the scene.
Chief Rossi said both drivers were taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries. After Ms. Brown was released from the hospital, she was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of liquor, second offense; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; following too close on a state road, speed greater than reasonable; failure to wear a seat belt, and open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Chief Rossi said that police found a three-quarter full bottle of Absolut vodka and an empty bottle of Stolichnaya vodka in the pickup truck.
