Sand sculpture contest combined lots of sand and talent

Sunny skies and a warm, humidity-free day provided the perfect backdrop for the 6th annual Sand Sculpture Contest at South Beach in Edgartown on Wednesday last week. The event is sponsored by the Edgartown Board of Trade.
More than 60 beachgoers turned out to sculpt buckets of sand into whimsical shapes. The most popular theme this year was the Olympics, according to Janice Donaroma, co-organizer along with Kayla Smith.
Jeff Donaroma, Libby Ellis, Bonnie DeSousa, Carlos DeSousa and Abbey Smith had the difficult job of picking the winners, listed below.
People's Choice Award (a very popular category):
Olympic Podium, junior category (Connor Levy, Cole Levy, Sean Demeritt, and Kyle Demeritt).
Medusa, adult category (Kim, Bruce, Bailey and C.J. Kimball).
Sand Sculpture award
Junior category: 1. Candy Land (Grant, Lauren, Charlotte and Audrey Hanchar Grace and Lark Murphy). 2. Mermaid (Whyte Family). 3. Pac Man (Greg and Maeve Olson).
Adult category: 1. Medusa (Kim, Bruce, Bailey, and C.J. Kimball) 2. Fido and dog bowl (James, Cassie and Danielle Mahar) 3. Fishing Boat (Elizabeth Cuzzupdi and Agatha Freedburg).
