New Yorkers win 35th Chilmark Road Race

The 35th annual Chilmark Road Race won’t be remembered for its beautiful summer weather. Saturday’s race took place in a heavy drizzle, with 1,354 runners competing.

Several runners vied for the lead along the hilly 5K course on Middle Road, but Hugh Parker of New York City broke away from the lead pack with about a mile to go and crossed the finish line first, in 16:07.29.

David Melly of Newton was the race runner-up and finished in 16:34.31.

The women’s winner also hailed from the Big Apple. Nnenna Lynch crossed the finish line in 19:21.27 to place 24th overall.

Island runners raced well and took 10 of the first twenty spots (places 8-17). Half race for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School track and cross-country teams.

Joshua Sohn of Edgartown was eighth overall in 17:45.98, followed by: (9) Jeremy Alley-Tarter, Oak Bluffs,17:54.89; (10) Jose Alves, Oak Bluffs, 17:57.20; (11) Kyle Joba-Woodruff, Vineyard Haven, 17:59.90; (12) Arthur Smith, Oak Bluffs, 18:05.01; (13) Michael Schroeder, West Tisbury, 18:05.37; (14) Cooper Chapman, Chilmark, 18:16.07; (15) Matt Hyde, Vineyard Haven, 18:29.18; (16) Sam Oslyn, Oak Bluffs, 18:45.98; and (17) Bill Regan Jr., Oak Bluffs, 18:59.74.

Finishing in the top ten, ahead of the Island contingent, were, (3) Sam Garfield, Holland, Penn., 16:39.10; (4) Corey Kunz, Hoboken, N.J., 16:55.91; (5) Peter Metz, Washington, D.C., 17:16.04; (6) Avinash Sridhar, Worcester, 17:22.97; and (7) Keegan Skidmore, Carlisle, 17:30.81.

The first Vineyard woman to the finish line was Ellen Masseur of Chilmark, who placed 46th overall, in a time of 20:18.35.
