Three comedians, each one a headliner in his own right, will perform this Saturday, Aug. 18, at Flatbread (formerly Nectars and The Hot Tin Roof) at the airport.
Lenny Clarke, the first among equals, and his friends Artie Januario and Dave Ruso will perform. The show will be taped for broadcast on NESN-TV, the home of the Boston Red Sox.
A Cambridge native and Chilmark resident, Mr. Clarke has been a working comedian and actor for more than 30 years. Starting out in Boston during in the early 1980s, Mr. Clarke wrote and starred in a local TV show, "Lenny's Late Show." His most recent TV gigs have been as Uncle Teddy on the FX channel series, "Rescue Me," and as Melvin Newman in NBC's "Are You There, Chelsea," loosely based on a book by Chelsea Handler.
Mr. Clarke, who never talks without his distinctive heavy Boston accent, said he now calls the Vineyard home. "I only leave so I can make money to live here," he told The Times recently. He said he bought a house in Chilmark about 16 years ago because they wouldn't let him on Lucy Vincent Beach. He said he knows he is still just a wash-ashore. Mr. Clarke said he sometimes works Vineyard material into his act and began talking about one of his favorite things to do on the Island, riding his bike, and those "other riders who wear spandex."
Artie Januario is one of Boston's premier comedians. Mr. Clarke said Mr. Januario works as a pharmacist by day and a comedian at night. Mr. Januario works all over the country, including Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and his hometown of Boston. Early in his career, Mr. Januario made a name for himself opening for national headliners such as Dom Irrera, Brian Regan, Richard Lewis, Lenny Clarke, and many more. Now, he is one of the most well-known and respected comedians on the east coast, according to Mr. Clarke.
Mr. Clarke is also a big fan of Dave Russo, who, he said, is one of the funniest comics working. After winning the Boston International Comedy Festival's Best New Comic award, Mr. Russo signed a contract to perform on the E! Entertainment Network's series "The Entertainer," starring Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton. He has also appeared on Comedy Central, NBC's "The Today Show," The Phantom Gourmet, NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and the TV show "NESN's Comedy All-Stars."
