To vote, you’ve got to register

To the Editor:

The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard wants to be sure that citizens are current with their voter registration for the upcoming election season — including any change in name or address, or registering for the first time.

Friday, August 17, is the last day to register to vote for the state primary election on September 6. October 17 is the last day to register for the state and national election on November 6.

The league reminds Vineyard residents that they can register at their town halls in the town clerk’s office, at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, or by mail using an official state form available at the town clerk’s office or at http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elepdf/2012-Voter-reg-mail-in.pdf.

Persons who are eligible to register to vote in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts must be: a U.S. citizen, and a resident of Massachusetts, and 18 years old on or before election day and still meet registration deadlines.

The league urges citizens to be prepared before voting in the September 6 primary election. This is the election when political parties will choose their candidates, and there are contested races on the Democratic primary ballot for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The state and national election on November 6 asks voters to elect a President and members of Congress, the state legislature, Dukes County, and vote on three statewide ballot questions. For more information on the ballot questions, go online at http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/ele12/ballot_questions_12/pip12idx.htm .

After you confirm that your voter registration is current, the league wants to remind each of you of the power of one vote — your vote. Use It.
