Grammy-nominated vocalist Gregory Porter is coming to Martha's Vineyard directly from a successful European tour in Oslo. He is bringing his jazz-pop-rhythm and blues stylings to the Vineyard for the first time.
Mr. Porter, whose voice is somewhere in the family of dulcet tones of Nate King Cole, Al Green, Al Jarreau, and Charlie Pride, and can even sound like B.B. King at times, has been a hit throughout Europe, including England, where he made the cover of the jazz magazine Jazz Wise. He was a guest on Carole King's BBC Christmas special last year. He toured with Jools Holland among others. His latest CD, "Be Good," is currently in the top 50 on the Billboard jazz chart and has been on the chart for more than 24 weeks.
His 2010 début CD, "Water," racked up a stream of accolades and awards. "Water" garnered a best jazz vocal Grammy nomination, a rare feat for a debut recording, rocketed to number one on both iTunes and Amazon in the UK, and ended up on an array of year-end "best of" lists for 2010 in several genres.
A three song clip of his performance last year on the BBC's Carole King and Friends special can be viewed at youtube.com/watch?v=Cq2IeDPzQOs.
