Car crashes through picket fence on Tisbury's Main Street

August 29, 2012

Michael Ashley, 26, of Washington, D.C., drove his 2009 BMW sedan off the road and through a recently painted white picket fence at 172 Main Street in Tisbury around 4 am on Tuesday.

Mr. Ashley and his passenger, Raymond Khan, 23, of Dover, Delaware, had minor injuries and were transported by the Tisbury ambulance service to Martha's Vineyard Hospital, according to Tisbury Police Sgt. Tim Stobie. He said both men were out of the car when Tisbury Police Officers Jason Marathas and Jeremie Rogers arrived, according to their report.

Mr. Ashley told the police officers he and Mr. Khan were returning home from a party in Chilmark and that "he thought he fell asleep" while driving. Sergeant Stobie said police cited him for negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

The accident caused extensive damage to the BMW, and its airbags deployed, Sergeant Stobie said. There was also some damage to the front yard of the property.

Correction: The print version of this story incorrectly identified Sergeant Tim Stobie as a lieutenant.
