Rotary bike fundraiser circles MV

Scenic routes are the courses for the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard’s 3rd annual fundraising bicycle ride, Cycle Martha’s Vineyard (CMV). The ride will be Sunday, October 14. It is a recreational ride, not a race, according to a CMV press release. The proceeds will benefit Windemere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and other Rotary charities. This year’s CMV event is in memory of Lucinda Chandler, a frequent volunteer at Windemere before she died in 2010.

Riders can choose from two routes. Both begin and end at the PA Club in Oak Bluffs. The 100-kilometer (62-mile) route circuits the Island, to Aquinnah returning through Katama and Edgartown. The 50k (31m) hits the State forest bike path, through Katama, Edgartown and back to the PA Club. All roads in the ride are paved.

There is a $100 registration fee and an early registration discounted fee of $90 before September 3. Although additional donations are appreciated, no additional fundraising is required to participate in the ride. The registration fee entitles each rider to aid stations and assistance along the course, a t-shirt, and the post-ride barbecue. Registration closes the day before the ride October 13.

Dogfish début

The Vineyard Dogfish, an expansion franchise in the Baseball Clubs of Cape Cod 35+ league, opened their 2012 campaign with a doubleheader split against the Buzzards Bay Raiders on Saturday at Vineyard Baseball Park.

The Dogfish dropped the opener 12-8, but took advantage of a depleted Raider pitching staff to take the nightcap 22-1.

Adam Bresnick and Andrew Aliberti each had 6 RBI on the day, and Zeke Vought went 6 for 6. Pitcher Jay Chalifoux tripled twice and also earned the first victory in Dogfish history.

Comprised of MV Little League coaches and MV Sharks management, the Dogfish face the Raiders again on Saturday, September 8, at 12:30 and 3:30 at Vineyard Baseball Park.
