Martha’s Vineyard Community Notes

Off we go

The United States Air Force Band of Liberty from Hanscom Air Force Base will give a free concert at 5 pm, Friday, September 14, at the Ocean Park Band Stand in Oak Bluffs. If the weather does not cooperate the concert will be indoors at the nearby Dreamland Ballroom across from the Flying Horses.

The free concert is sponsored by the town of Oak Bluffs and the Oak Bluffs Association. The U.S. Air Force is covering expenses.

“From the swingin’ sounds of Glenn Miller to the best of contemporary big band jazz, the United States Air Force Liberty Jazz Band plays it all with style and sophistication,” according to a press release.

Interim director named

Grace Episcopal Church announced that Penelope Wong of Vineyard Haven was named interim director of Grace Preschool, effective Sept. 1 following the resignation in August of Deborah Jernegan.

“It has been the dream of many of us at Grace Church that we might one day have the ability to expand into a bi-lingual school that would be welcoming to a greater diversity of island students,” Rev. Robert Hensley, Grace Church rector, said in a press release. “With the addition of Penny, who is fluent in Portuguese, to our staff we now have the capability and capacity to make this dream a reality.”

Meditation classes get underway
