Martha’s Vineyard boys run to victory in Vineyard Invitational

The Martha’s Vineyard boys varsity cross country team raced to a 21-point win over 11 other schools on Saturday, September 8, in the 6th annual Vineyard Invitational.

Counting all four races, a strong field of thirteen schools competed against MVRHS: Barnstable, Barrington, R.I., Belmont Hill, Durfee (Fall River), Falmouth, Hopkinton, Milton Academy, New Bedford, Notre Dame (Hingham), Plymouth North, Sandwich, Shepard Hill Regional (Dudley), and Sturgis Charter Public School (Hyannis).

The Vineyard varsity put four runners in the top fifteen. Mike Schroeder was 7th (17:14.35); Jeremy Alley-Tarter took 8th (17:17.97); Cooper Chapman placed 10th (17:30.23); and Kyle Joba-Woodruff was 13th (17:40.46). The Vineyard harriers compiled a top overall time of 1:27:55.90 and scored 60 points in the win. Hopkinton was second with 81.

The boys junior varsity team was no less impressive. The Purple and White captured places two through four and took seven of the top 20 spots. Julian Kelly jumped out front quickly and came to the tape in second place (18:44.70) out of nearly 120 runners. Andrew Wiley was third (19:03.27); and Thorpe Karabees was fourth (19:16.04). George Sykes (19:55.19) was 13th; Galen Mayhew (19:56.18) was 14th; Silas Berlin (20:00.28) was 16th; and Sam Permar (20:07.85) placed 19th.

In the girls races, the varsity harriers came in sixth out of nine schools with an overall time of 2:02:32.04. Julia Neville was the top Vineyarder and finished 16th (21:55.95). Hannah Moore was 23rd (23:07.89). Lucy Norris (25:33.89) and Willoe Maynard (25:44.65) made the top 40.

Samantha Bunker led the way for the Island contingent in the jayvee race and placed 21st (27:11.31). Carter D’Angelo was next for M.V. (28:25.20, 38th).
