Aquinnah

The wind has shifted. You can feel a change from last week to this week. The end of summer has started and it has brought cooler, shorter days and very cool nights. It’s also the season of potlucks and food festivals with the Living Local Harvest Festival the last weekend of September and Morning Glory Farm’s Pumpkin Festival on October 13. What better way to celebrate the end of our crazy busy season than by stuffing ourselves silly with all the bounty that we are so lucky to have here.

Phil Weinstein’s first class on the American short story will be held today at the Old town Hall at 5 pm. This session focuses on “In Our Time,” a collection of Ernest Hemingway’s early stories.

There will be a blood pressure clinic today, September 13 from 2 to 3 pm in the town hall. Free and open to all residents of Aquinnah. If you have any questions, please call the town nurse, Mary McLaughlin, RN, at 781-534-2543.

At the Aquinnah Cultural Center this week:

On Friday, September 14, you can stop by for a tour of the Vanderhoop Homestead. On Saturday, there will be a Traditional Wampanoag Boat Making Demonstration. Darius Coombs, Mashpee Wampanoag, will be here to work on the mishoon, or dugout canoe, using fire as the main woodworking tool. View a film of the first crossing from the Cape to the Vineyard in mishoons in over 200 years, or try your hand at making a fish net.

On Wednesday, tours are available. The hours of the ACC are 11 am to 4 pm. Call 508-645-7900 or email aquinnahcc@gmail.com to learn more about the museum and its programs.

The Aquinnah Shop will be open for breakfast and lunch through Columbus Day weekend. They are open seven days a week from 8 am until 2 or 3 pm. They are no longer serving dinner.

Faith’s Seafood Shack will stay open through October, how late they stay open during the day is dependant on business and the weather. Of course On the Cliffs and some of the other shops stay open until Thanksgiving so we are not going to close up shop immediately. Remember that Adrianna does her big sale right around Columbus Day and she has some great stuff this year.

The Outermost Inn is serving dinner Thursday-Sunday starting at 5:30 pm; their last night will be October 7. Call 508-645-3511 for a reservation.

The Chilmark Tavern will be serving dinner Thursday-Monday starting at 5:30pm; their last night will also be October 7. Call 508-645-9400 for a reservation.

Belated congratulations to Woody and Jamie Vanderhoop who welcomed a son on August 16. His full name is Sôwanahsh William Spears Vanderhoop, Sôwanahsh is Wampanoag for Southwind. He is very healthy and cute and looks like a little man already.

Paul Manning and his family and friends celebrated his birthday at the Chilmark Tavern this past Friday. They had a big chocolate cake and stayed on into the night talking and laughing. Speaking of birthdays, Anja May is celebrating hers today and Ona Ignacio is celebrating hers on Sunday.

The Aquinnah Public Library is once again looking for a head librarian; Cathy Thompson will be retiring in November. I for one, will really miss Cathy. She had the unenviable task of replacing a very popular head librarian, Jenny Christy, and she handled it with grace and helped to steer the library into a new phase by joining the Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing Program. She also put together great speaker series and was always up for a game of Angry Birds with the young ones. Thank you, Cathy, for all your service. You can get all the information about the position in the papers or on the town’s website at Aquinnah-ma.gov.

The Powwow was this weekend and even though the weather was a little touch-and-go on Sunday, judging from the pictures I’ve seen a good time was had by all. Amos Sauer told me he danced and got a chocolate pop. What could be better?

I will be away this week, so if you have any information for the column, please email me. Thanks!
