Girls soccer

Molly Stark scored from a direct kick with 18 minutes left in the match to lift Whitinsville Christian to a 2-1 win over the visiting Vineyarders on Saturday. Jenny Lindland scored for the Purple.

Despite the loss to the Crusaders, Coach Richard Bennett liked what he saw on the pitch. “We had a lot of good opportunities to score, probably more than they did, but that’s the way the game is sometimes,” he said.

The girls are away at Sturgis tomorrow and will host Whitinsville in a rematch on Saturday at 1:30 pm at Dan McCarthy Field.

Boys soccer

The defending Eastern Athletic Conference champions got off to a rough start in the first match of the new season, Wednesday, September 5, in North Eastham against Nauset.

The Warriors, who swept the Vineyarders last season, handed out a 5-1 pasting to start off 2012.

Evandro Medici scored the Vineyard goal.

The boys will try to exact some revenge upon Nauset when the Warriors visit Dan McCarthy Field for the home opener on Saturday night. The match kicks off at 6:30 pm.

Wednesday night the Vineyarders traveled to Barnstable to take on the Red Raiders. The result will be posted on mvtimes.com

Golf

The Vineyarders were to start the season on September 4 at Heather Hill Country Club against arch-rival Bishop Feehan, but the match was washed out and rescheduled for Thursday, September 13.

Instead, M.V. debuted on September 6 against a tough Bishop Stang team in an EAC match at Farm Neck.

Coach Doug Debettencourt’s team got off to a great start and downed the Spartans 249-259. Mike deBettencourt had the low score, shooting a one-under-par 34. His sister Kat deBettencourt shot a 38.

Things did not go nearly as well on Tuesday in North Eastham as the Vineyarders lost to Nauset 250-262. Both deBettencourts and Matt Marchand shot 42.
