“More” by I. C. Springman, Illustrated by Brian Lies – An elegantly illustrated fable with few words describing a Magpie whose passion is collecting more stuff. This works for the picture book age as well as a discussion starter for older children.

“Robe of Skulls” by Vivian French – A delightfully snarky adventure tale that pits an evil sorceress, plotting to pay for a gown purchased from the three fates, against a plucky young girl, whose family treats her worse than Harry Potter, aided by a bat and a second royal son. This is one of the titles being considered for the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award for 2013.

“Rebel Fire” by Andrew Lane – Imagine a teenage Sherlock Holmes, with all of the curiosity, less experience, and fewer skills. In 1868, Sherlock Holmes discovers his American tutor is involved in tracking John Wilkes Booth in England. Sherlock enlists friends to dangerously investigate on his own.
