Two evening duplicate bridge games, where American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) members may score points toward their Life Master designation, are now the only organized competitions taking bridge fans into the Island’s fall and winter months of play. Yet lots of “summer only players” are still at the tables.

On Thursday, September 13, at the Island Bridge Club (IBC) game Sandy Lindheimer and Jim Kaplan grabbed overall winner honors with a 63 percent average game score. Also playing east/west Ency and Robert Fokos took second place and Barbara Besse and Miles Jaffe came in third.

The north/south team of Carol Whitmarsh and Sari Lipkin (59.66 percent average) took first in their direction. Also playing north/south Duncan Walton and Richard Eubanks took second and the Gerry Averill/Bob Iadicicco team came in third. Seven tables were in play.

Tuesday, September 11, at the Martha’s Vineyard Bridge Club (MVBC) competition David Donald and Rich Colter came in first overall with a 61.9 percent average game. Also playing north/south Cecily Greenaway and Bill Blakesley took second place and Barbara Besse and Sandy Lindheimer took third place.

Across the eight tables in play, at east/west, Nancy Neil and Bea Phear took first place (56.85 percent average) followed Miles Jaffe and Jim Kaplan in second. There was a tie for third between the teams of Carol Whitmarsh/Sari Lipkin and Simmy Denhart/Joan Perrine.

Tip of the week

Masters Mollie Whalen and Joe Ashcroft send along this tip. “When opening preemptively, and you are vulnerable and the opponents are not, it is important that the quality of the preemptive suit be good. You may relax this expectation a bit when the vulnerability is equal and even a bit more when the vulnerability favors you.”

The MVBC game is held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm at the Stone Church in Vineyard Haven. Admission is $4. Contact Sue at 508-693-9396 or posturepal@aol.com for assistance in finding an available partner.

The IBC game is held Thursday evenings at 7 pm at the Up Island Council on Aging, Howes House in West Tisbury. Players needing a partner are urged to contact Gerry at 508-693-2889 or gsaverill@gmail.com by noon on Wednesday for assistance. The cost is $5 a session.
