Ballroom dancers twirled around the dance floor at the Portuguese-American (P-A) Club last Sunday evening, some very skilled and some just learning. The evening featured West Coast Swing dance lessons with Tom Carberry and Kaitlin Dore.
A regular weekly event open to dancers and want-to-be dancers, Ballroom Dance MV pegs its beginnings back to the spring of 1996 at the parish hall of St. Andrew’s church in Edgartown. They have been in many locations since, among the more notable The Fanny Blair Hall at the Nathan Mayhew Seminars.
They expect to be at the P-A Club at least through the winter, according to dancing stalwart and teacher Janet Holladay. “We had about a dozen couples on Sunday. The floor has been redone at the P-A Club making it a great space to twirl around,” she said.
They have planned their fall Dance Party on October 14 with the Tashmoo Trio providing music. The group meets every Sunday from 7 to 9 pm, and there is a requested donation of $3 dollars. Dance instruction is free. For more information, go to ballroomdancemv.org.
