Arthur P. Silvia, 88, died on Thursday, September 13, at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Arthur was born on June 27, 1924, in Vineyard Haven to Antone and Clara Silva. He attended Island schools and later enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II.

After being discharged from the Navy, he returned to the Island and met Marie Barboza. They were married in 1949 and had two children. Arthur and Marie later divorced.

Arthur worked for the Department of Public Works and was a well-known double bassist. He often played bass in trios at various Island establishments. Besides music, Arthur enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, boating, biking, hiking, and gardening. He was known to enjoy a gin and tonic at five o’clock each day also.

Arthur retired in 1979 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Works. During this time he met Joan Lenske, a pianist and community volunteer. They were married in 1989. Arthur and Joan enjoyed all outdoor activities but loved playing music together. They were a duet at many Island venues, particularly Grace Church. Joan died in May 2012.

Arthur is survived by a brother, Ralph Silva, of Martha’s Vineyard; a son, Arthur Silva (Eileen) of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter, Darlyne Silva-Welch, of Chino Hills, Calif.; three grandchildren, Jason Suva of Phoenix, Ariz., Stefanie Silva of Sioux City, Iowa, Christan Eric Welch of Los Angeles, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, ten brothers and sisters and his wife, Joan.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 20, at 2 pm at the chapel at Windemere Rehabilitation Center at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
