Hilma Ann Dumont of Orlando, Florida, and West Tisbury died in Orlando on September 22, 2012. She was 85.
Born Hilma Flanagan in Bronx, N.Y., on April 6, 1927, she moved to Groveland at age 4. After graduating from Groveland High School, she graduated from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in Lowell.
Hilma married Royal S. Dumont on September 6, 1948. They moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1980 after purchasing Misty Meadows Horse Farm from Jim Alley and the late Bill Honey. She ran the family business for 20 years while also working for 20 years as a maternity nurse at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, helping scores of women during and after the births of their children. She possessed a magic touch when caring for other humans and amimal alike.
Hilma is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Royal S. Dumont, her sister, Ann Reperant of Ancee, France, her daughters Sharon Finer of Oak Bluffs, Karen Dumont of West Tisbury, Ann Grenier and her husband, Paul, of Temecula, Calif., and her son, Michael, and his wife, Julia, of Teaneck, N.J., six grandchildren — Jessica Finer Volk, Gabriel Finer, Sidra Dumont, and Rebecca, Benjamin and Jennifer Grenier, as well as many neices and nephews scattered around the world.
Plans for a memorial celebration on the Island will be announced at a later date.
