Lincoln F. Hanson

October 3, 2012

Lincoln F. Hanson of Vineyard Haven died peacefully on Monday, October 1. He was 92.

Born in Lincoln, Linc grew up in Cambridge. He attended Andover Academy, Brown University, and Columbia University, where he earned a Ph.D in education.

He taught learning theory at the University of Buffalo, Middlebury College, Columbia University, American University, Tatnall School in Delaware, and Johns Hopkins University. He was a co-founder and teacher at College A in Rockland County, N.Y.

Linc was married to Allen Schauffler for 62 years. He was a loving father of four — Leslie Look of Edgartown, Sara Alwardt of West Tisbury, Stephen Hanson of North Attleboro, and Kim Hanson of Aspen, Colo. He was grandfather to eight and great-grandfather to two.

Linc was "Mr. Volunteer" at the Community Solar Greenhouse, Windemere, Habitat for Humanity, and Nathan Mayhew Seminars, where he was a founder and a teacher. The Hanson family summered on the Island for 60 years. Linc and Allen became year-round residents 20 years ago.

Linc's family and his teaching were his greatest loves, but "caring for all" was his greatest contribution.

A celebration of Linc's life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, October 27, at the Sailing Camp off Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Solar Greenhouse (COMSOG) on New York Avenue in Oak Bluffs or Habitat for Humanity (habitatmv.org).
