Tip of the week

From her academic perch in Pennsylvania, Life Master Mollie Whalen emails this reminder: “When you open the bidding and your left hand opponent (LHO) makes a call, this may interfere with your partner’s normal response, but it may also provide additional opportunities for your side. For instance if LHO overcalls a suit, now ‘Double’ becomes an additional available bid. Also your partnership can have special meanings for cue-bidding the opponent’s suit. As another example, if LHO doubles, now ‘Redouble’ becomes an additional available bid.”

In coming weeks this column will provide Ms. Whalen’s tips for dealing with opponent’s overcall.
