The MV United Under-14 boys soccer team traveled to Barnstable and Sandwich last weekend and won the Harvest Cup tournament.

Last year, the Island team reached the final and lost on penalty kicks to Simsbury, Conn. This time around, United turned the tables on the Trojans with a 1-0 win and defeated Cape Cod Reunited, 1-0, in the final to bring home the Cup. Nick Bonneau scored the match winner in each.

MVU got off to a rocky start by losing 2-0 to the CCJHS Bears from Truro, Nova Scotia, in the opening match.

United evened its record with a dominating 4-0 victory over Lusitana of Cumberland, R.I., in the second match. Devon Metters, Aksel Cooperrider, Nevin Wallis, and Gabriel Bellebuono scored for the Vineyard.

After edging Simsbury, MVU finished the opening round at 2-1-0 and proceeded directly to the final on Sunday afternoon.

The tournament win was a huge boost for United, who recently posted their first win in MAPLE Division 2 after suffering through an 0-3 start. United were promoted from Division 3 last spring following a successful inagural season at the Mass. premier level, the state’s highest.

The Vineyard will host the Cape Cod Crusaders on Sunday at 1 pm at MVRHS.
