Steve Lampson judges 500th at Fall Fuzzy

The Martha’s Vineyard Horse Council (MVHC) held the Fall Fuzzy, the final show of the season, Saturday, in West Tisbury. The event was particularly of note for Steve Lampson, who judged his 500th horse show and his 12th on Martha’s Vineyard.

To celebrate the accomplishment, MVHC president Julie Flanders presented Mr. Lampson with a special cake.

Over the Hill gang wins again

The Island’s over-40 soccer team, Vineyard FC, is off to the best start in its four-year history.

On Sunday, VFC travelled with 20 players to Norfolk and left with a 4-1 win to remain undefeated at 6-0 atop the New England Over The Hill Soccer League Masters Division 6 South standings.

The side from Island Copper controlled the match from the outset. Early in the first half, Jose DeBrito skillfully dribbled through the Norfolk defense and beat the keeper for a 1-0 Vineyard lead. Skip Dostal put two more in the onion bag before halftime and added another in the second half to complete the hat trick.

VFC hosts Westwood FC at 9:30 am on Sunday, October 14, at MVRHS.

Junior high gridders meet BC High

The Martha’s Vineyard Junior High football team traveled to Boston on October 3 to play the Boston College High School seventh grade team. The game was a great opportunity for the Vineyard players to test themselves against one of the top programs in Massachusetts.

The Eagles prevailed, 32-6, but the 12-6 halftime score was an indicator of just how well the young Vineyarders played.

Team captain Chris Patnaude scored the Vineyard touchdown. Lucas DeBettencourt and Enis Foster also had strong games for M.V.

In the third quarter, the Eagles struck for two touchdowns as the Vineyard’s inexperience started to show.

With BC High in command entering the final period, the Vineyard coaches gave the sixth graders and newer players a chance to show their stuff.

Despite the loss to Eagles, the game was a valuable experience for the junior Vineyarders, who looked to bounce back at Roxbury Latin on Wednesday afternoon.
