Martha's Vineyard Bridge Club results
This past week of Island duplicate bridge competitions reminded one that in autumn, the days and the players dwindle down to a precious few at least compared to the summer turnout.
On Thursday, October 11 at the Island Bridge Club (IBC) game sixteen players were on hand. Gail Farrish and Charlie Harff took first place overall with a 57.74 percent average game. Barbara Besse and Miles Jaffe were in second (55.95 percent average). There was a tie for third place: the team of Bea Phear and Cecily Greenaway as well as the team of Pam and Rich Peia with identical 51.79 percent average games.
Tuesday, October 9 at the Martha's Vineyard Bridge Club (MVBC) was a team (rather than two-player partnership) competition. The Gail Farrish, Charlie Harff, Sari Lipkin and Carol Whitmarsh team took first place overall with 46 points. With 39 points each the second place teams of Nancy Neil, Bea Phear, Dan and Nancy Cabot tied Ency and Robert Fokos, Deirdre Ling and Ed Russell. Twenty four players were on hand.
Tip of the week
Life Master Mollie Whalen provided four tips for dealing with an opponent's overcall. This is the second of those recommendations: "Responder may cue-bid the opponent's suit. Your partnership should be clear about what this means. One suggestion is that a cue-bid shows a limit-raise (11-13 points) in the opener's suit. This then frees up the original limit raise to be weaker and preemptive. For example, 1 heart by partner; 1 spade by opponent; 3 hearts –normally a limit raise—would now be a weaker preemptive raise in hearts. And a cue-bid of 2 spades would become the limit raise."
