RCBL sign-up

RCBL basketball is back at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown after a one-year hiatus. The new season is set to start on November 5. The league is still in need of a few players to fill the rosters of the four teams.

The teams competing in the 2012-13 campaign are the two-time defending champion Heat, captained by Sandy Fisher; the Lakers (Heath Estrella); The Suns, (Mike Baptiste); and the Bulls, (Alex Schilcher).

To sign up, contact league commissioner Abby Leighton at 508-524-9330.

Over the Hill Gang still perfect

Vineyard FC took three points the easy way this week. The Westwood Masters could not field enough players to visit the Island over the weekend and had to forfeit the match.

With the win, the Vineyard over-40 soccer team improved to 7-0 and remains atop the New England Over The Hill Soccer League Masters Division 6 South standings with 21 points. The Island Copper side is off to the best start in its four-year history.

VFC next takes to the pitch on Sunday in Foxboro against the Warthogs.

Tennis exhibition

Vineyard Youth Tennis head pro Michael Halisky will play Rodney Ross in an exhibition match at VYT. Mr. Ross is a former Davis Cup player from Trinidad and is also a certified teaching pro. The match starts at 5 pm, Sunday, October 21. Free pizza for young spectators.

Vineyard Tennis raises racquet in Falmouth

Ten women from the Vineyard Tennis Center traveled Monday to the Falmouth Sports Center for a team match. Five doubles teams and one singles match filled the courts to capacity.

Michelle Debettencourt used solid net play and partner Cathy Lattanzi lobbed effectively to defeat the Falmouth first doubles team, 6-2, 6-0.

Beth Sawyer and Kim Averill volleyed their way to a 6-3, 6-2 win in second doubles.

Jen Combra and Maya Moran played a flawless serve and volley game and racked up winners all over the court in a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Lynn Blake and Debbie Regan prevailed 6-3, 6-0 by using a variety of shots with pinpoint location to keep their opponents on the run.

Carlene Gatting joined a Falmouth trio and created all the momentum in a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Connie McHugh played the only singles match and won easily 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

Matches against Falmouth continue throughout the winter every first Monday of the month.
