Bruins top Caps in Island League debut

The Bruins and Capitals faced off Sunday morning in the inaugural game of the in-house Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey Island League. The B’s skated to a 4-2 win over the Caps in an exciting, fast-paced game.

MVYH instructionals begin

The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey instructionals got underway Saturday, with 20 of 30 new or returning children participating in the free program offered thanks to MVYH’s GROW initiative fundraising.

The kids had fun getting their bearings and beginning new drills. It’s not too late to join. Contact Andrew Grant at granta2@yahoo.com.

Equipment will be provided while supplies last or visit Sports Haven’s new shop at the MV Arena for starter packages. The instructionals are a great beginning program for children aged four and up.

Nor’easters roll over Vineyard Peewees

Nantucket swept a Sunday series with the Vineyard Peewees at the MV Arena by scores of 10-4 and 8-4.

Megan Sonia, Hunter Ponte, Wilson Slayton, Colby Zarba, and Jack Murray put the biscuits in the basket for the Vineyard. Hailey Meader, Hunter Meader, Hunter Ponte, Jack Murray, Wilson Slayton and Colby Zarba all earned assists.

Vineyard goalies Joe Kershaw and Michael Metcalf had a busy night between the pipes.

Over the Hill gang clinch playoff berth

The Vineyard FC Masters remained undefeated in The New England Over The Hill Soccer League’s Master Division 6 South at 8-0, after a come-from-behind 3-2 victory Sunday over the Warthogs in Foxboro.

The hard-fought win gave VFC 24 points and ensured the team a playoff spot which may well be enough to gain promotion into Division 5 next season.

The ‘Hogs led 2-0 early in the second half before VFC staged its comeback. The Islanders overtuned the deficit with relentless pressure and came up with three second half goals from Ralph “Skip” Dostal, Joelcio “Cebola” Alvares, and Edilson “Pezone” Costa on a penalty kick.

VFC travels to Braintree on Sunday to take on second place FIMA.

North American Speed Sailing Invite underway

Thirteen of the world’s best speed sailors will be competing at various points around the Vineyard through October 31 in the second annual 2012 North American Speed Sailing Championship Invitational (NASSCI). The event started on October 15 and features two Islanders, defending champion and world speed record holder Robbie Douglas and Brock Callen.

Thus far, the speed sailors have competed off of Cape Poge, in Katama Bay, and on Sengekontacket Pond.

Americans Robbie Douglas, Damien Leroy, Brock Callen, and Alex Aguera currently hold down the top four positions. Christophe Prin-Guenon of France is fifth.

Holmes Hole sailing

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its fall racing series on Sunday, October 21. Six boats came to the 10 am start of the 6.5-mile harbor race on a crisp, autumn day with a 10-knot easterly wind.

Mo Flam single-handed his Alerion 28, Penelope, to first place on corrected time. Phil Hale placed second in Wicked, followed by Roger Becker in Gloria, Dan Culkin in Magic Tim, Mike Loberg in Masquerade, and David Lott in Avanti.

The evening racing series continued with a 3.25-mile harbor race on October 18.

Six boats came to the 4:30 pm start. Phil Hale’s Wicked, a 30-foot Shields, was the fastest boat and won first place in moderate easterly wind. Phil was followed by Roger Becker in Gloria, Jerry Goodale in Stormalong, Geoff Gibson in Latonka, and David Lott in Avanti. Moffett winner Jared Hammond sailed a good race in Andiamo but was disqualified for an early start.

The final evening race of the season is Thursday afternoon, October 25 at 4:30 pm.

The Sailing Association’s fall series finale is set for Sunday at 10 am. The Race Committee will announce season standings and award the Hugh Schwarz cup to the skipper of the winning boat.

VYT Players Excel in Junior Tournament

Vineyard Youth Tennis player Patrick McCarthy of Oak Bluffs won the boys 16 and under singles title at the Mid-Cape Racquet Club in South Yarmouth on Sunday, October 21. It was Patrick’s first title in the older age division. He defeated another VYT player, Justice Yennie, in the final.

Kat Roberts, also of Oak Bluffs, won her flight in the Girls 14 and under division and Molly deBettencourt (Oak Bluffs) won in the same age division. Lizzie Williamson (Edgartown) was a finalist of her flight in the Girls 14 and under division. A total of 15 players attended the tournament.

Michael Halisky wins exhibition

Vineyard Youth Tennis head pro Michael Halisky defeated Rodney Ross on Sunday, October 21, in an exhibition inside the bubble at VYT.

Halisky won, 6-1, 7-6, in front of 50 spectators. Both players displayed powerful serves, but in the end Michael’s power was too much for the Trinidadian player.

Youth soccer tryouts

MV United travel soccer tryouts for players in grades four and up will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, November 4, at the West Tisbury School. The make-up date is Sunday, November 11, at 2 pm.

New players must bring a copy of their birth certificate. A refundable deposit of $250 will be collected at the tryouts. Players who miss the tryouts without prior notification will be wait-listed.For more information, visit mvsoccer.org
