William Street in Vineyard Haven, from Spring Street to Woodlawn Avenue, will be closed by the Tisbury Police Department to motor vehicle traffic, from 6 to 9 pm on Wednesday, October 31. Colonial Lane, Church Street, and Center Street, from Franklin Street north to Main Street, also will be blocked off to prevent vehicles from entering William Street.
The goal is to ensure the safety of trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Only foot traffic will be allowed, so witches on brooms, assorted ghost traffic, and other unusual creatures will have to travel as pedestrians.
Residents on the closed roads, however, will be allowed vehicular access to and from their properties. A police officer will be stationed at the first barricade at Spring and Franklin Streets for assistance.
Polic Chief Dan Hanavan suggests that West Chop residents heading out of Vineyard Haven on Franklin Street should take a right onto Center Street and a left on Look Street to get to State Road.
The Tisbury selectmen approved the street closings at a meeting last week after Chief Hanavan recommended them.
