To the Editor:
As many of you know by now, I have been struck down with a serious crippling and incurable disease, and my condition was recently upgraded to severe and greatly complicated by a massive infection on top of it all. I am unable to work and can not even function most of the day, I have now been out of work for a good six weeks, and no end is in sight of a near return. Just hopeful that treatments and recovery will be a short and positive road.
To start my thanks, I have to go straight to friend and absolutely awesome, kind, and generous J. B. Blau of Sharky's and M.V Chowder Co. Once again this man has gone above and beyond for the community, this time for me and my family. While I was away in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, he managed to get together all my friends and family and put together one of his famous dine-to-donate fundraisers. He gathered everyone without a single hint or clue to me and my wife, then on Monday morning he came to my house to give me an envelope full of love and support from this amazing community. He organized this entire event, and the entire community came together to show their support once again for a family in need.
It's not just about the money, which certainly came at the right time to help with bills, but the love and support from each and everyone involved. Words just can't describe it to anyone who is not a true Islander, but it is the best damn community help/support system in all the world. The way people simply have a way of knowing to show up and put something together to help each other out in a time of need. Toward a friendly, neighborly family oriented way of life, I have always tried to help who, where, and when I can, but never would I expect to be on this receiving end of such support.
There are no words to describe the feeling of help and support when people show up at your door with food, gift cards, money, and offers to help and do anything you can imagine to help out. I (we) are truly blessed to have such a place and people to work together like this. I can't express my endless gratitude and appreciation from my family. You are all sincerely in our thoughts and forever in our hearts, loved dearly from the family of Mikey and Ashley Waters, along with Mikey, Hailey, Danielle, and Jayla, thank you all so very much.
Michael (Mikey) Waters
